COLUMN: Another year, another election

Quesnel voters are set to elect a federal representitve on Sept. 20

Yet another election is upon us, and this time it is a federal one.

This will mark my fifth election in five years, dating back to covering the Winnipeg municipal election as a student, and writing about a former Winnipeg Sun publisher winning a city council spot.

I’ve also notched a Manitoba provincial election, a federal election and a B.C. provincial election.

Of course the election was called while I was out on vacation for the first time in a year.

But I think we can just take all opinions from the previous B.C. federal election and plaster them onto this federal election.

A party holding a stable minority in the legislature calls an election during a pandemic in hopes of securing a majority.

It’s shocking how similar the NDP’s call in B.C. was compared to the federal Liberal call to me.

While I wasn’t looking forward to the election, I was still caught up in the opening day speeches and am excited to be reaching out to the local candidates and sharing their views with our readers.

It will be my first time voting in an election in B.C., as I hadn’t been living in B.C. long enough to be eligible to vote in the 2020 provincial election.

As I begin the process of registering and letting the government know I now live in the Cariboo-Prince George riding, this is your reminder to vote, and double check what you need to do to ensure you are eligible.

It seems there are a lot of newcomers to Quesnel like me who moved here during the pandemic.

Turnout in our riding for 2019 was 65.5 per cent, right in line with the average across Canada. Lets try and make it even higher this election.
