The Royal Canadian Legion gives its thanks to the residents of the Greater Vernon area who proudly wore poppies in commemoration of Remembrance Day, and demonstrating once again that it is a caring community supporting our veterans and their families
Our thanks goes to all of the facets of the community including individuals and organizations who laid wreaths at the Wesbild Centre Nov. 11 in honour of our fallen comrades
We congratulate the schools and teachers who support the significance of Remembrance Day by having ceremonies at the school and inviting veterans to participate, and especially to Silver Star Elementary for the poem for Remembrance Day which was written and read by Jade Despres
Our thanks also goes to the many business that provided venues for our canvassers and allowed us to leave donation trays at their counters.
The poppy campaign was not only supported by legion members but other community organizations such as the Army, Navy and Airforce Veterans Association and the navy, army, airforce and navy league cadets.
We offer special thanks to Lake City Casino, which, at no charge to the poppy campaign, processed thousands of dollars of loose, donated coins.
Notwithstanding trying economic times, nearly $35,000 was contributed by the citizens of Greater Vernon and it will ultimately be redistributed to needy veterans and their families.
These funds are held in trust and are subject to scrutiny and audit at the legion zone and command levels.
The legion thanks all attendees and participants of the Remembrance Day ceremony and especially the Wesbild management and staff.
Once again, well done Vernon.
