To the Editor,
Having read a series of unchallenged letters in favour of keeping the dams, I offer these thoughts.
Also, I respectfully suggest that the Nanaimo News Bulletin is part of the problem by publishing endless stream of letters bemoaning the loss of the dams.
No one wants to remove these structures but the provincial Dam Safety Branch just happens to rate them as the highest-risk structures in the province.
It beggars the imagination to think about the consequences of a dam burst.
The Globe and Mail carried an excellent article on the issue, pointing out that in every other community where dams are being removed, it is seen as a good thing.
Only in Nanaimo does a community embrace such a serious threat to their existence, clinging to it like a drowning man grasping at straws. Yesterday, I was prevented from carrying out my duties in the Chase River. It was an ugly way to end my career in fisheries biology.
