Deer count an eye-opener

I was most impressed with the organization of Penticton's first deer count

May I say that I was most impressed with the organization of the first deer count. The well-balanced groups mustered at City Hall at 5:30 a.m. We were divided into nine zones and instructed to count the hooves in our zone and divide by four, and report back.

The count was low, but we were told by the biologist that the female deer were birthing and that likely they had moved out of sight or up into the hills. We were told we will have to do it again in the fall at which time we would observe a lot more. I’m sure the city will have to provide some infrared glasses at 5:30 a.m. in the fall.

If we only have as many in the fall as we counted today they may be an “endangered species”. If we have more we could always get Dan Albas to ask the prime minister to send in the army to help us.

Anyway, that is my report for now. I will let you know what happens in the fall, but for right now I’m going to bed. These 4:50 a.m. mornings are hard on me.

P.S. I think the real reason the deer count was low was that someone told them we were coming.
