Don’t change the name of Humbird Street

I wish to record my objections to renaming the one block long Humbird Street in our area of Chemainus, and particularly the notion that the name should come from an indigenous source.

We residents of the area also consider it to be sacred ground.

The little park located on Humbird Street is a sacred little oasis for us to sit and relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. In addition, the park is designed to encourage pollinators as it is loaded with flowering plants. What better way to support the environment than maintaining Humbird Street and Humbird park?

We demonstrate our regard for the land by the obvious care we take of our properties, and the name of the street shows respect for the original pioneers of the area, the noble humming birds.

There are no civic addresses on this Humbird Street, and never will be, so it should have no effect on calls to emergency services.

If that is a problem on the other Humbird Street, change it to “Humbird Street South, or Humbird Lane”.
