Regardless of who was at fault in Ladislav Cumpelik’s brush with death, it illustrates the need for bicyclists and motor vehicle drivers to pay attention.

Drivers should do shoulder and mirror checks, as bicyclists often speed past vehicles. Bicyclists should be ready for obstructions and bad shoulders – one fool in England encountered a traffic island and swerved in front of a car, fortunately the driver went up onto the curb to avoid the Darwin candidate.

While some drivers don’t signal, and some truck drivers are erratic, drivers may turn off a busy road quickly to avoid being run into by another vehicle.

Watch out and plan ahead.
