EDITORIAL: Food drive spreads holiday spirit

The Realtors Food Drive supports the food banks in Greater Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby and Lumby.

North Okanagan residents are known for their generosity and compassion and there’s no better example of that than the Realtors’ Food Drive.

A tradition for 36 years, the Wednesdat event supports the food banks in Greater Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby and Lumby.

“This food drive is really essential for our ongoing operations,” said David MacBain, with the Salvation Army in Vernon and Enderby.

And there’s no question those non-profit operations are under pressure.

The start of the recession in 2008 led many residents to seek assistance for the first time, and  conditions haven’t improved yet for many. In fact, some residents face the tough choice of paying the rent or buying groceries.

It’s expected the Vernon food bank will hand out about 850 hampers this Christmas.

That’s a staggering statistic but what’s more amazing is the willingness of residents to help their neighbours. Bags and bags of food will be collected during the Realtors Food Drive Wednesday.

And the realtors and supporters make it easy to give. Just be prepared with a bag or two of food donations and leave it on your front step for collection. If canvassers don’t show up, call your local realty office Thursday for pick-up.

Of course there will also be other groups organizing campaigns for local food banks this holiday season.

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year and it reminds all of us of how we can make a difference in the lives of others.

Make sure you embrace the spirit and do your part. You will feel better for it.
