EDITORIAL: Fundraiser continues despite recent break-in

Some heartless thieves broke into the Mission Cancer Society office and stole cash donations, donated gifts and gift cards.

On Saturday, the Mission branch of the Canadian Cancer Society is hosting a Robbie Burns dinner and dance. It’s a fundraiser to help kids cope with the battle against cancer.

Money raised will go to pediatric care and Camp Goodtimes, where ill children and their families can go to have some family time and just feel normal.

It’s a noble cause, but this year’s event has a shadow hanging over it.

Earlier this week, some heartless thieves broke into the Mission Cancer Society office and stole cash donations, donated gifts and gift cards. Many of those items were slated for a silent auction, part of the before mentioned fundraiser’s activities.

And while the event will still go on, the break-in has delivered a blow to organizers.

It appears as though Mission has experienced a large number of break-ins in the past few months.

In Downtown Mission alone, there have been 19 break-and-enters.

While the Mission RCMP is doing everything it can to find the perpetrators, it’s up to the local business owners to protect themselves as much as possible.

Alarm systems, window bars and other precautions are the best bet to stop those determined to steal.

All that being said, it doesn’t help replace the items which the cancer society has lost. Only the kindness of supporters can undo the damage done by the thieves.

Perhaps the community of Mission, already well know for its generosity,  can rise to the challenge once more and support the society.
