EDITORIAL: It’s the foundation of the Comox Valley

The generosity of people in the Comox Valley is astounding.

The generosity of people in the Comox Valley is astounding.

Not a week passes without somebody raising money and/or awareness to help somebody else.

The Comox Valley Community Foundation is one of many organizations that makes the Comox Valley a better place.

Craftily investing donations since the late Stan Hagen spearheaded its creation, the CVCF annually awards grants to a wide range of projects benefiting the area. The beauty of the concept is that foundations award grants from interest on the principal amount without diminishing it.

It’s harder to do this when interest rates are low, but that underscores the importance of getting donations.

Of course, you have a once-a-year opportunity to have a great time while contributing to CVCF coffers.

The 17th annual gala happens Oct. 20 at the Native Sons Hall. Hot local band Time Well Wasted will play, augmenting an evening that includes an excellent meal and many prize draws, which include two Canuck hockey tickets and airfare to Vancouver.

Don’t delay because all 230 $100 tickets are sold annually. Get your tickets by e-mailing scrawford@cvcfoundation.org.

If you want something extra to what is going to be a fun-filled evening, don’t forget that helping the foundation helps caring organizations in the community that are elevating the quality of life in the Comox Valley.

Last year’s grants included $5,000 to the Comox Valley Transition Society to help refurbish Lilli House, their home for women and their children who are escaping abusive relationships.

Another in a series of grants was $5,000 to the Cumberland and District Historical Society for its Cumberland Museum Multi-Media Project.

Oct. 20 is the deadline to apply for next year’s grants.

To learn more about applying or about the CVCF in general, visit  www.cvcfoundation.org.

Maybe you can have fun at the gala, help the foundation and get in on a grant, too.
