One man’s mission, actually a Marathon of Hope, to outrun cancer continues across the country Sunday.
Terry Fox started his journey in 1980 with little fanfare and today, even after his passing, Canada continues to run in his name.
“Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue,” said Fox. “It’s got to keep going without me.”
Locally, the annual event goes Sunday at Coldstream Elementary at 9 a.m. (registration is at 8 a.m.)
But the continuation of the Marathon of Hope has not survived in some regions.
The annual event has been cancelled in several Canadian communities this year, including Abbotsford, due to a lack of volunteers.
The same fate nearly hit Vernon a couple years back, but luckily several volunteers stepped up just in time.
“Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way,” said Diana Williamson, who is chairing the organizing committee for this year’s event. “We’re really looking for the community to participate.”
And that can mean by running, or walking, cycling, pushing a stroller – plus four-legged friends are also welcome.
After all the cause may be serious but the event is all about fun and coming together as a community to carry on Terry’s legacy.
Plus this year it’s even easier to take part as the new Team Up for Terry component means family, friends and sports clubs can get together and tackle the route as a team.
