Editorial: New food bank a welcome Source of hope for Langley

Word that Sources — a food bank based out of South Surrey/White Rock — has arrived in Langley as a member of Food Banks B.C. comes as very welcome news, indeed.

As part of the provincial association, Sources agrees to comply with the Food Banks of Canada code of ethics, which dictates that anyone who uses a food bank is treated with the utmost dignity and respect.

That doesn’t include making people jump through bureaucratic hoops in order to receive help.

Their philosophy is that if people are willing to line up half an hour for food, then they must actually be in need food.

That seems like common sense to us.

The result is a low-barrier option for people in Langley who depend on the food bank. All Sources requires is proof that clients live in the its catchment area.

And even if providing proof is difficult, it’s not an insurmountable stumbling block.

Currently, the facility, which has been open since last fall, has fewer than 500 registered users, but they expect that number to grow to more than 1,000 people soon.

With the increase in people accessing their services, Sources is going  to need more support.

This is a great opportunity for Langley to demonstrate, once again, just how generous a community it is.

They’ll soon be in need of more volunteers, including drivers.

And, most of all, they’ll be needing donations of food.

If you’d like to help out with either, please consider giving them a call.
