Like an NHL general manager making a mid-season addition to his squad, the City of Castlegar installed a new member to its council on Monday night with successful by-election candidate Florio Vassilakakis taking the official oath of office.
There are many parallels that can be drawn between the world of sports and real life, and this event is just another one. The major difference is that there is no individual to take credit, or responsibility for the addition (well, other than Florio, of course) – that distinction rests with the electorate that voted in the winner by a healthy margin, and it’s a good thing.
It will be a good thing for Mr. Vassilakakis (if and when frustration kicks in during the time he’s getting up to speed on the local government procedure) to think back to the 400+ ballots marked with an ‘X’ beside his name on by-election night.
Like any newcomer to civic politics the rookie councillor has a lot on his plate – and when an issue comes up over which he may take some heat, that memory of grassroots support will be a comfort as well.
Kudos to all who make the commitment that goes with an elected position, it’s a lot of work, often with little or no gratitude.
And congratuations to the newest member of the team, bringing ideas and initiative to the table. Here’s hoping the experience proves as interesting and rewarding as you hope and expect.
