To the Editor,
Re: District adds horse course to stable, May 7.
Isn’t this amazing? Children in Nanaimo school district can’t learn basic skills in communication and mathematics, but will be able to learn horsemanship.
The fact that this course was developed by a horse lover and obviously one who has the financial means to own a private stable of horses does not surprise me. The fact she is an assistant superintendent makes me wonder where her priorities lie.
Will every child, no matter of what socio-economic group, be able to take this course?
Will transportation to and from the location be provided free of charge? Will safety equipment be provided at no charge?
If the answer is yes, then where will this money come from? Surely not the taxpayer who wants children who are better able to read, write and do mathematics.
And even if there is a benevolent soul providing the funding, wouldn’t additional funds be better used for more basic programs?
