At the Smithers municipal council meeting of Tuesday, Oct. 11, the council was asked for their position regarding the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project.
The response was that council had agreed not to take a position on this matter.
It was put forward that council was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Town, not to debate or advocate policy. Matters such as an oil transmission line.
This council, the last three years, has been a leading proponent of the Highway 37 power transmission project and rightly so.
All elected governments have the opportunity, indeed the duty, to influence public policy.
