Error no reflection on Oak Bay high team

Happy to see vicnews.com updates that the Oak Bay High junior girls basketball team was allowed to play in provincials

Re: Error keeps team from provincials (News Feb. 26).

I was glad to see in the vicnews.com updates that the Oak Bay High junior girls basketball team was allowed to play in the provincial invitational championship tournament after all.

The junior girls team won its berth in the provincial championship fair and square by defeating other Island teams. That the coach was late submitting the application form, or remiss in not completing all the required information, in no way reflects on the skills of the girls who worked so hard to win the right to participate.

I agree that there could be another way to “punish” the school and/or the coach if it must, but my impression upon reading this article is that the decision of B.C. School Sports Commission, particularly Commissioner Westcott, is mean-spirited and dare I say an underhanded way to cut the competition for other teams.

After all, Oak Bay frequently fields strong sports teams, and basketball is no exception.
