Thirty-two years ago, a brave young man dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s, Newfoundland and began his Marathon of Hope. Terry Fox wanted to run across Canada and hopefully raise $24 million, $1 for every Canadian.
So much happened since that day as we all know – Terry got as far as Thunder Bay, Ontario when his cancer which had spread made him end his run. That was 1981, the year he died. A sad, sad day.
It is time again for us all to do our part in helping keep Terry’s dream alive. As he said in Toronto, “somewhere the hurting has to stop.” Please take part or support our local Terry Fox Run/Walk on Sunday, Sept. 16. Joggers, walkers, cyclists, baby strollers or wheelchairs are all welcome. Go as far as you can or want to. The official route is five kilometres.
Please bring a friend or neighbour and a cheque or cash – no amount is too small. Donations by the way are tax deductible, so it is really easy to give. Did you know that 83 cents of every dollar donated goes to research – a very high amount for charitable donations.
Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the event starts at 9 a.m. See you at the Hope Recreation Centre!
Once again, three generations of “Enns girls” will be participating, including seven-year-old Katerina, and 14-year-old Joe Poulton of Sunshine Valley.
