Fell is no fool

Recently, Area F Director Julian Fell presented a motion in favour of reiterating the Regional District of Nanaimo’s opposition to the installation of B.C. Hydro’s smart meters.

In 2011, mayors and councillors from across British Columbia — including Parksville and Qualicum Beach — passed a resolution at the Union of B.C. Municipalities calling for a moratorium on mandatory installation of smart meters. These elected representatives have endeavored to address public concerns and fulfill their mandate to take action should they learn of something that could be harmful to residents (B.C. Health Act, Sec. 83-1). These public appeals were ignored by the provincial government and Gary Murphy, B.C. Hydro’s Chief Project Officer for Smart Metering and Infrastructure.

To my knowledge, no other political party has registered official support for a moratorium on smart meter installations. Nods and winks and public relation spin do not translate into political commitment or action.

Murphy’s recent letter to the editor in The NEWS, in the local newspaper, accused Julian Fell of presenting “incorrect and misleading information about the safety of smart meters.” In response to this statement, I direct Murphy to the Bio-initiative Report 2012: A Rationale for a Biologically-based Public Exposure Standard for Electromagnetic Fields (ELF and RF).

The report was “prepared by 29 authors from 10 countries, 10 holding medical degrees, 21 PhDs and three MsC, MA or MPHs. Among the authors are three former presidents of the Bioelectromagnetics Society, and five full members of BEMS. One distinguished author is the Chair of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation.  Another is a Senior Advisor to the European Environmental Agency. ”

The report covers approximately 1,800 new studies reporting bioeffects and adverse health effects of electromagnetic fields. This report concurs with Fell’s concerns regarding electromagnetic radiation (EMR).

Well done Julian — you are demonstrating the ideals of political representation.

I commend your integrity and tenacity in representing the people in this area. I hope you receive lots of support as you demonstrate the principles of freedom and liberties that we embrace as Canadians.
