To the Editor,
Re: Beban Pool helps keep city’s seniors healthy, Letters, July 19.
The Beban Pool is frequented daily by many seniors like me, as well as other members of the community. The pool provides enough room for us to swim our laps, and the water temperature is not too cold, unlike the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre.
Closing the pool for three months during the summer would be a detriment to the city employees who work there and small businesses who rely on patronage from customers like me.
Has the city fully examined where it can save money? If so, they would know for example, if they were to change all light bulbs in city-owned buildings from incandescent to LED bulbs, there would be a substantial cost savings. Benefits to the environment would be numerous as LED bulbs do not contain mercury. Ballasts for fluorescent lighting can now be retrofitted, which is less costly than complete ballast replacement.
It is my hope council will consider these suggestions. Initiatives such as these will help save money to keep the pool open, and will have a positive impact on the city’s entire infrastructure and services.
