Well it’s that time of year again. School is coming to a close and high school students across the Cariboo are about to embark on the next chapter of their lives.
High school now is very different from when I attended. We didn’t have cellphones, blackberries, iPads, iPhones or laptops.
But I am sure that one thing hasn’t changed. I imagine you’ve all been asked more times than you can count “what are you going to do next?”
Let me take the opportunity to give you some advice.
Don’t stress too much about what to do next with your life. Here’s a secret. If you do what makes you happy and work hard, everything will work out in the end.
As someone once told me, find what you love to do — and then figure out a way to get paid to do it.
Whatever the graduating students of the Cariboo decide to do in life, I’m sure they’ll find success.
As for the start of summer, I want to take the opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe summer holiday. Maybe you’re travelling abroad, or maybe you’re visiting one of the beautiful parks or campgrounds here in British Columbia, but wherever your summer takes you, I hope it’s spent with friends and loved ones.
My summer is going to consist of some work and some play. I will be in the beautiful Shuswap region on a houseboat trip with family and friends and will also take the time to play in our own backyard with day trips to the Chilcotin.
I’ll also be taking the opportunity to travel through northern and rural regions of the province as part of a newly formed rural caucus.
This caucus will listen to the smaller communities and make sure that their voices are heard in Victoria. I’m excited to get out and hear what British Columbians have to say. So once again, I wish the new grads and all those in the Cariboo-Chilcotin a great summer.
Donna Barnett is the Liberal MLA for Cariboo-Chilcotin.
