Grandpa’s broom

I am delighted to hear that there may be some financial help in tackling invasive plants such as broom and gorse

Regarding ‘Battling invasive species’ (The NEWS, May 20) I am delighted to hear that there may be some financial help in tackling invasive plants such as broom and gorse, and also thought there may be some interest in this quote from my grandfather’s diary:

“February 12, 1897 Comox: Visited Hawkins Bard in hut on top of cliff… he is from Glasgow. He has planted broom and gorse from home.”

My grandfather, the Rev. Charles E. Panter, was Chaplain on the British Flag ship H.M.S Imperieuse, stationed in Esquimalt from June 1896 to April 1899, and kept a diary of his time here on Vancouver Island, of which I have a copy.
