The reduction of the allowable property size to one acre for the building of a rentable guest cottage fools no one old enough to have seen this misnomer used repeatedly as the first step in the conversion of agriculturally zoned land into subdivisions.

The second step is the subdividing of each property; the third is the building of a guest cottage on each of those; and finally the last subdivision and the final guest cottage on the thin slice of remaining land.

(Mayor Alice) Finall’s grinning face fools no one who has witnessed the in-fighting that passes for North Saanich municipal meetings, in which any initiatives to support the ALR or the environment are completely ignored. It is clear that nothing is done about environmental or agricultural issues because our mayor and council have no interest in any future for the area other than one of subdivisions, industrial parks and shopping malls.

Such a vision belongs in an area unsuited for agricultural purposes, but presumably the council and their development friends believe they will make enough from this devastation to be able to afford the sky-rocketing prices of imported agricultural products.
