Happy anniversary Trail Times

"It’s very easy to live in a free society and take for granted the fact that we can write what we want."

I would like to congratulate the Trail Daily Times (yes, it’s still “Daily” to me) plus all current and past staff members for the 120 years of service to this community. I am proud to have played a small part in the creation of one of B.C.’s best newspapers.

Seeing the 10 smiling faces on the cover of the Jan. 2 issue made me think about the 12 people who worked in a similar office in a bigger city across the world.

Similar folks at the Paris publication Charlie Hebdo were just doing a job when they were killed by gunmen. I don’t know the dynamics of their jobs but I can imagine they were writers, ad sellers, compositors, circulation organizers, maybe even carriers.

It’s very easy to live in a free society and take for granted the fact that we can write what we want. Living in a small town like this, we can be thankful for the lack of daily crime, fatal accidents, suicide bombers, child abductions and other bad news stories that are fed to us from the big cities. If the worst thing that happens in Trail is that the plane couldn’t land due to fog, I’d say we’re sitting pretty.

Just don’t ever forget that there are still parts of the world where the old adage “kill the messenger” still applies.

So count your blessings, buy an ad, write a letter to the editor, appreciate the work being done and value our little paper and the people who work there.

Keep up the great work. I hope the Times survives another 120 years.
