Hard decisions more about re-election

Re: Tough budget choices on horizon for council (News, Aug. 9)

For some time now, Victoria city council and staff have been wrestling with budgets and a desire to keep them from rising by more than 9.75 per cent by 2015.

May I ask council now how many “hard decisions” will you be making as the November 2014 civic elections come upon us? May I offer you are motivated more by re-election than by making hard decisions.

Cutting lunches and closing a ticket window at a parkade are hardly tough decisions given the task you have ahead of yourselves.

You have looked at managers roles and redundancies. Have you looked at staff levels and/or efficiencies? Are all city staff being asked to work smarter? Work harder?

The recent report by Maximus Canada says “Victoria provides relatively good value for money.” I can tell you that I won’t give my business or my money to any local business which provides “relatively good value.”

I believe we all want good or excellent value. We as taxpayers have the right to expect that from our City Hall at all levels.
