Harper pursues China despite history

There was a time when Stephen Harper openly criticized the Chinese government for its abuse of human rights.

There was a time when Stephen Harper spoke passionately about democratic ideals and openly criticized the Chinese government for its abuse of human rights. Now Stephen Harper is trumpeting the need for more Chinese investment and openly criticizing idealists who defend Canada’s environment. This week Harper is in China, cap in hand, kneeing before the altar of economic power. No doubt he is reassuring Communist bureaucrats that his majority government will do whatever is necessary to get the Northern Gateway Project built on time and on budget. Perhaps the Chinese will entertain him by demonstrating their methods of suppressing protesters.

Why has our prime minister changed so radically? Harper has been seduced by the power of the “dark side,” those deep-pocketed, multi-national corporate leaders, whose hands ooze with Alberta’s black bitumen.
