HEROES – The Daybreak Rotary club of Campbell River. The Rotarians donated over $7,000 towards the purchase of a new digital scoreboard at Nunns Creek Park. The Rotary Clubs in Campbell River continue to show support of Amateur sports, as this is the second year in a row that they have contributed to major improvements at Nunns Creek. The scoreboard was installed by crews from Campbell River public works, and went into operation for the playoffs on the Pee Wee division field. ZERO – The City of Campbell River who are hell bent in not allowing the city to develop but want it to be a boring, retirement only, sleepy hollow. Get real please and start thinking about growth for the community. If you don’t start catering to the younger folks, then once us oldies are all dead, the city will be as well. – Sally Maxwell
HEROES – Brent, Ester, Neil and Sarah at Browns Bay Marina. Last Monday our crew of three friends left the Campbell River dock for a much-anticipated circumnavigation of Quadra Island. We planned our departure to coincide with all the appropriate tides to get us through Seymour Narrows and the other rapids we would have to transit in the next three days. We transited Seymour Narrows without much fanfare but soon hit large waves and gale force winds. This was uncomfortable but not something our 36’ sailboat couldn’t handle. The problem came when the tossing and turning broke up a lot of sediment from the bottom of the fuel tank which quickly clogged the fuel filters and the fuel intake line. We were forced to turn back and with limited engine power we had to put up a sail in heavy winds and sail into Browns Bay. We called Browns Bay Marina and they contacted a local water taxi to meet us at the entrance to the marina and guide us in with a tow in case we lost all power. We made it to the fuel dock and that’s when we experienced the full generosity of the Browns Bay staff. Sarah took our initial distress call and organized the water taxi escort. Ester came to our aid by picking up new filters from Campbell River. Neil brought us a fuel pump to try and pump out the bad fuel and stayed on hand to bring us more fuel and even cut us a piece of wood to remount the fuel tank. Brent was on hand to offer advice and make sure we got the things we needed to get back on the water. The Browns Bay staff went far beyond the call of duty and that made all the difference for us and the remainder of our trip!
Thanks from an appreciative sailboat crew. – Kevin Harrison
HEROES – Brent Nicholas from Discovery foods for the fantastic donation towards our Car Wash and BBQ! – Jennifer Kay, Campbell River Head Injury Support Society
HERO – Jim Costain, the owner of Dairy Queen. Our classes were away on a field trip on the actual hot lunch day, but Jim kindly made and delivered their hot lunches on an alternate date so that students did not miss out. We are very appreciative! Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Turner, and two thankful Penfield classes.
HEROES – The Parks department at City Hall. Thank you so very much for painting over the bullying remarks on the Big Rock. Hopefully this gives a message to the perpetrators that bullying is not accepted. – June Grain
