Over the past couple of weeks we have certainly experienced a flavour of fall weather. The heavy rains, wind and fog, in addition to the cool mornings and evenings certainly started us thinking about the coming winter. This past week has been warm and sunny, although I do notice that the sun is setting much earlier now, causing my own internal clock to wind down faster at night. Some of the leaves are starting to change and the corn harvest is nearly finished.
This is my favourite time of year. The air is cool and fresh and we are basking in the bounty of our gardens and orchards, squirrelling everything away for ourselves and our livestock. We are also starting to spend more time indoors, curled up with family and friends, taking time to reflect on the summer days gone by that seem like just yesterday. It is also the time to plan our harvest feasts!
Following the theme of Thanksgiving, what are your annual traditions? How have they changed over time as your family grows and stretches further apart? What are you most thankful for? Perhaps these fall images of our community members, circa 1940, will trigger some memories for you.
Over the coming months our volunteers will be working more diligently to record your memories. So please, take some time over the Thanksgiving long weekend to think about your history and what you feel is important to share with your family and community. If you are interested in having your memories become part of our community archive, please reach out to museum staff and volunteers – we would be more than happy to visit with you and make them part of our holdings!
The Agassiz-Harrison Museum and Visitor Information Centre open season hours will be ending on Saturday October 6, 2018.
