As a citizen of Qualicum Beach I expect more from our mayor. I expect our mayor to be respectful. I expect he will respect councillors and not make demeaning comments. I expect that he will not slam our neighbours. Many times I have heard him say “we don’t want to be Parksville” and now I see him quoted in the paper (A10 The News, March 22) that “I hope we are never like Parksville.”
Last October mayor Westbroek sat in the front row at the Nanaimo Conference Centre and heard that leaders on Vancouver Island want their neighbours to respect their choices and not bad mouth them.
Several letters to the editor have pointed out how frequently the mayor has his picture in the paper. I expect that our mayor will respect the volunteers who drive our community and ask that they to be featured and recognized, rather than himself always being highlighted.
I also expect that our Mayor will respect our business community and be proactive in reaching out to ensure that a healthy working relationship exists. Businesses have been reaching out to the town for the 12 years I have lived here and it appears little has changed and the business community is continuously painted as money hungry people who want to destroy Qualicum Beach — and that is certainly not the case.
I expect more of our mayor and I am tired of being disappointed. I hope someone new is considering running in November. Teunis has been an elected official in Qualicum Beach for 15 years and he has had enough time make his mark. He should show real leadership and step aside.
