In Our Opinion: Volunteers met the call to action

Last week, Prince Rupert’s Joy Sundin asked on the Northern View This Week podcast for more volunteers to help out for Winterfest 2016

Last week, Prince Rupert Special Event Society’s Joy Sundin asked on the Northern View This Week podcast, and anywhere else she could, for more volunteers to help out for Winterfest 2016.

The days were numbered until the last special event was put on by the society in 2016 and Sundin and her team had a list of names confirmed to help out, but not nearly enough.

So, the director pleaded for more people to add their names to the list to help, whether it be directing traffic at the waterfront at the Sailpast, manning the various barricades set up around town, or setting up and taking down the required materials to make Winterfest the success it is every year.

And typical of Rupert, at the very last minute, community members from all over answered that call.

Everyone from city councillors to high school students could be seen last weekend wearing their distinct red and yellow safety vests and greeting those old and new to the North Coast with friendly smiles.

Whether it was your first Winterfest in Prince Rupert, or 21st, the special events volunteers made it all magical.
