Institutions need not be frightening places

Having appropriate places for mentally ill to live is important

Re: Mental illness costs sizeable (Our View, Jan. 23)

You don’t advocate “a return to the days of institutionalizing people with mental disabilities simply because they can’t function at a high enough level to live on their own.”

Is it better to let them be “free” to wander the streets, often unaware of goings-on around them, or perhaps being taken advantage of by others who function on a “slightly higher level?” Institutions do not have to be ugly, frightening and depressing places.
