I have to agree with the thrust of these articles. However, I would like to add a few other areas for discussion.
How many of the court delays are caused by defence council overbooking? How often is the delay based on all the Crown’s witnesses showing up? How often is it a tactic of defence to delay, and delay again, hoping for the charge to be tossed or a witness finally gives up and goes to work?
After all, defence’s sole job is to defend their client. Period. An acquittal or tossed charge equals success.
Lastly, the judges seem to sit and allow the oft-repeated and pointless questions to go on and on. They allow any and all excuses, by defence, for a delay. But pay your taxes late? Good luck.
In short the system, as it is, does not work. It is inefficient, costly and unproductive. Yet as always, nothing will be done.
After all, this is Canada, eh.
