Editor: I have concerns about the potential for increased traffic accidents at 216 Street and 48 Avenue.
Langley Township engineering has indicated that the Township may remove the Five Corners roundabout in Murrayville, as a consequence of the Brookswood Plan.
That would be a mistake. The roundabout acts as a natural obstruction that slows traffic at the intersection. A traffic light would result in serious accidents, as was the case before the roundabout was built.
The intersection lying at the base of two steep hills is a natural place for motorists to speed up to “beat the light.” This does not happen with the roundabout being there and acting as a deterrent to speed. We have seen a big drop in the severity of accidents at this intersection since the roundabout was built.
I personally witnessed vehicles travelling in excess of 150 km/h when the intersection was a five-way stop. This is impossible with a roundabout.
Please make sure the roundabout is preserved in any new Brookswood plan.
