Lack of compassion has left a wound

It has been horrifying to watch the events unfold surrounding the demise of our beautiful maple tree on James Street.

It has been horrifying to watch the events unfold surrounding the demise of our beautiful maple tree on James Street.

I say “our” tree because that is really what it was. This tree belonged to the people of Duncan. The library in itself is a place where we gather to be educated, see theatre and gather together as a community.

There has been a complete lack of respect by our elected mayor.

His handling of this decision, along with the Island Savings Centre commission, and the message sent to future generations should be brought into question.

There are a lot people who really do care about our environment, global warming and the future for our children.

This was seen with the gathering of protesters who were smart enough to understand the importance of keeping the tree.

This situation was really not fully about how old the tree was, its condition, but that the tree did matter to so many people in our community.

Your complete lack of compassion and understanding in this matter has left a wound in my heart and I am sure many others.
