Looking for a suitable, affordable place to rent in town is a problem faced by many in Vanderhoof, myself included.
When I first moved into town, I had limited options and so took on a small one-bedroom suite. However as time went on and my puppy grew, I decided to look for something more suitable, preferably somewhere with a fenced-in yard for Barty and laundry. I got lucky with a house for sale, whose owner was willing to rent to me until it was sold.
However renting a home for sale puts one in an understandably precarious situation whereby, if the house is sold, as it was intended, you’re back to square one.
Consequently, I continue to search for more permeant lodgings and in my quest am faced with many frustrations…
An Internet search will return you with only “wanted ads” – so other people doing exactly the same as me and resorting to Internet postings in case a landlord happens to stumble across the ad.
Both estate agents I called in town, Royal Lepage and Remax, have long waiting lists for people looking to rent a property for sale or just looking for any hearsay on new rentals. At Remax they tell me they have dozens waiting, with people coming in most days to ask about possible rentals.
The papers (an easy glance for me) have very few listings and those that I do find, either don’t allow pets or are way out of price range for most singletons.
For me the main frustration is that there isn’t a centralized place that people can go to about renting…many towns have a Craigslist type website whereby you can advertise for free all sorts of things including buying and selling items, renting and general announcements. Maybe it’s time we had one of these started for the town.
In the meantime, if anyone does know of a nice house with laundry and a yard below $600..you know where to find me.
