As a concerned resident and taxpayer in Saanich, I note a questionable statistic from the council meeting on Feb. 2. Legal fees in 2015 have spiked to an amount not seen in years.
One of our newly elected councillors was astute enough to notice. All other councillors remained silent. The answer to such an obvious increase in legal expenses should be blatant. Yet Legislative Services didn’t offer any blatant answers.
Ever since the Spyware affair, I have been wary of what’s going on at city hall.
As municipal taxpayers, we should all be alert to the responsible use of our contributions to city hall. I’m curious to find out why Saanich suddenly needs so much legal advice.
If people don’t become involved in their government, the government will become more involved with itself.
Accountability breeds responsibility. The public has a right to know where their money is going.
