The BC Women’s Institute (WI) is celebrating WI Week, February 13 – 19. Their mandate: provide opportunities for friendship, education and self-improvement, along with charity, community work plus having a political voice for Canada’s rural women The Glenwood WI will be holding a bake sale February 12, noon – 2pm in the Extra Foods Mall. Great goodies to satisfy your sweet tooth plus information on the Institute. An article in Harrowsmith Country Life, October 2009 titled “Whither the WI?” indicates that WI membership is slowly shrinking. I think we are making a comeback, that in this environment: the 100 Mile Diet, all the green awareness is creating an atmosphere where the younger generation wants to learn how to bake bread, preserve food, manage a small farm, a garden. Who better to learn from than the women who have been living this way, some since the 40’s and 50’s? Check out our bake sale table, pick up information pamphlets, talk to us. Watch for upcoming fundraising events as we work towards earning the money for renovations to the bathrooms at the Glenwood Hall. This Hall has a long history and was built by the community through donations of materials and time, still owned by the Glenwood Women’s Institute.

A Scrabble tournament – just what is needed in the last dark days of winter. Bring your words to the library on Feb. 18. Registration starts at 6:30 p.m., games at 7 p.m. Cost is $5 with proceeds to the library for more books. Snacks provided to maintain you word sharpness.
Are you looking for something positive to do? Perhaps your church group, knitting group or book club would like to come out and help at the library. We are in the process of cleaning the books (wiping them down along with the shelves). It is not a physically demanding job but it takes time. It is a once a year project, really satisfying to see the water turn grey after wiping the books down. Call me at 250-847-4797. You could be involved in doing such a good deed.
Remember to vote for the Northern Lights Animal Shelter. Go to their website for a direct link. This is hugely important — you have until Feb. 28 to bombard the site with votes.
On ElderCollege, next up is Hanging Baskets & Containers on April 14. Other public courses you may be interested in: Working with Phyllo Pastry, Feb. 19. Pick up a supply list at the College; Culinary Italian, traditional recipes, on Feb. 26. Call 250-847- 4461 to register.
Closing with: Choices are the hinges of destiny. Pythagoras
