This letter is my response to Thor Henrich’s letter (Feb. 21). I felt a mixture of anger, fear, revulsion and sadness upon seeing the inclusion of the Cabela’s flyer in the Oak Bay News several months ago. At that time I wrote a short note to the paper, (not a letter to the editor), expressing my total opposition to accepting advertising from this company.
Including large advertisements from an American-based so-called “outdoors” company, which gains one third of its profits through firearms sales is just not acceptable in Canada. As Thor mentions, Cabela’s offers a large selection of semi-automatic firearms including surplus Russian and Chinese-manufactured military grade weapons. These flyers offering semi-automatic firearms are now going into (I expect) every home in the Capital Region, where they are seen by children and youth. These weapons will have a certain appeal to a part of the population. Slowly this will become a normal part of life. It’s a slippery slope, folks.
