To the editor:
Isn’t it reassuring to see (Okanagan-Coquihalla) MP Dan Albas happy about responses to “legislative initiatives”? (March 13 Capital News)
Not wanting freshwater mussels to invade our waters or supporting a Lyme disease strategy is “apple pie”—nobody would oppose these.
Only a relative handful of hunters own semi-automatic weapons, and they are, as always when such legislation reclassifies weapons, grand-fathered—i.e.: it does not apply to them. But, as the saying goes: If you need five rounds in your magazine to kill a deer, maybe you should not be hunting.
Also, of course, who would oppose sentencing child sexual abusers—in the past the Conservative Party of Canada’s motto was: “You’re either with us or with the child abusers.”
What Albas does not touch upon is the legislation aimed at voters and changes to the voting system. One of the most ardent Conservative supporters of this bill has repeatedly lied to the House of Commons and the Speaker has found prima facie grounds of breach of parliamentary privilege.
Mr. Albas’ colleagues brought the proceedings in the House against that MP to an end by using procedural ploys. With that manoeuvre they legitimized lying to the House of Commons which represents all Canadians.
Mr. Albas, if he reports at all, might want to stay away from the Prime Minister’s Office prescribed talking points, and tell us what is really happening in the House.
