LETTER: Argenta residents protest local logging tenures

From reader Chelsey Jones

There was a peaceful demonstration on Argenta Road on July 12 for community members concerned about imminent logging activity on the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face.

There is logging pressure from two sources on the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face, on Woodlot 491 (Sunshine Logging) which has already started, and the Cooper Creek Cedar tenure intending to start work this fall.

There remain many unanswered questions and concerns about both operations including how integrity of community water will be guaranteed (the Argenta-Johnsons Landing Face contains our community’s watersheds), whether the Karst geology is truly stable for logging, and how wilderness values (which have intrinsic value and are also supporting a burgeoning eco-tourism economy) will be preserved.

The intention of this gathering is to bring awareness about what is happening in our community’s forest. We want to make our concern about our fragile hillside and watershed known, and call attention to what we see as ecologically and community harmful forestry policies in BC. Also, we are gathering in solidarity as concerned community members to share our thoughts and ideas and support each other for what seems to be coming.
