To the editor:
On September 14, Burlington, Vermont, announced that it had succeeded in harvesting 100 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources such as wind, water and biomass.
The city of 42,000 did so cost effectively, and became a proud member of the Washington Electric Co-operative, which reached 100 per cent earlier this year.
On September 21 at the People’s Climate March in New York City, and at solidarity events throughout the world, folks will be hitting the streets to demand the world that we know is within reach, a world with an economy that works for people and the planet; a world better positioned to survive the ravages of climate change; a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities.
On November 15, local men and women will be vying for seats on Kelowna’s city council. If we ask those candidates just one question before we mark our ballots, it ought to be: What do you plan on doing to liberate Kelowna from using power produced by environmentally harmful fossil fuels, and when?
