The remains of a fire pit is the center of a recently deserted campsite in Cuthbert Holmes Park. Strewn with garbage, the owners of this site have abandoned both the site and the trash, irking locals.

LETTER: Campsites can’t encroach on parks

I am very pleased to see Saanich council finally taking action to deal with homeless campers in Cuthbert Holmes Park.

I am very pleased to see Saanich council finally taking action to deal with homeless campers in Cuthbert Holmes Park.

But it is not just that one park where problems have arisen. Overnight campers should be dealt with carefully and kindly but must not be allowed to fill large areas of our parks with garbage and the detritus of outdoor living.

My thanks to the new board of directors of the Gorge Tillicum Community Association for insisting this matter be dealt with after it has festered for years. It is a sign of new energy and enthusiasm from a newly constituted board of directors at the recent GTCA AGM.

I hope to see more important initiatives by the new group in the near future.
