School closures are a travesty. Our government’s mandate to close schools if capacity isn’t up to 95 per cent is an unrealistic goal and doesn’t take into consideration things like population growth and differences in attendance through the years. Students say the schools already feel jam-packed.
As a parent, I feel disappointed in the closure of Trafalgar. As a citizen of Nelson, it will be a shame if Trafalgar is closed because it may be torn down. The historical significance it holds would be like losing the courthouse or the firehall. The huge classrooms, the hardwood floors, the beautiful views are unique features that are to be lost. Never mind the teaching staff that has been polished to a well-oiled shine by the years of togetherness and experience.
Another ridiculous point to consider, is the exorbitant estimates of these so-called maintenance costs to buildings in the district. Some of which are not needed. For painting new numbers on inside doors on the Winlaw school, $7000. Wow. Plus, when a staff representation asked for an itemized list for Trafalgar’s maintenance costs, she didn’t get it before the final meeting there.
It’s a sham. I am sad that there seems to be an apathetic response to a clawing back to our children’s education. Will Canada still be seventh on the world’s best education systems 20 years down the line with these rushed, hard and forced decisions?
Be angry parents, get organized. Do something today before it’s too late! The board approved two special meetings, one on July 5 for school closure bylaw readings 1 and 2, and one on July 12 for school closure bylaw reading 3. It is at these meetings where the Board’s final decision regarding the School Closures will be made. Please participate and let your voice be heard. Plus write letters to Christy Clark. Thanks.
