Dear editor,
I had the privilege of being invited to the Comox Fire Department to hear the guest speaker for the Student Youth Firefighters Camp last week and it highlighted, once again, how fortunate our family was to end up living in the Comox Valley. The speaker, who had cerebral palsy, highlighted the importance of persevering regardless of life’s circumstances, and the message clearly resonated with the students.
It struck me that not many communities have student firefighter or RCMP youth camps put on through the volunteer efforts of many.
We are also blessed with numerous grass-roots local charities, non-profit social organizations, youth dance, theatre, music and sport opportunities, etc. – the list goes on and on, and all are mostly run by and available because of community volunteers.
Surely, we have our issues and problems but our Valley has a community spirit of caring and support second to none, particularly in time of need that gives us confidence to face adversity. In these times where sad and divisive stories seem to dominate the news, it is reassuring to live in a community that seems to value communal volunteerism, fostering optimism and support. To those in our community who volunteer, and continue to give support, your efforts are appreciated by many and make the Comox Valley a grand place to live.
Hugh MacKinnon,
Comox
