Letter: Cyclists are going to kill someone, some day

[A cyclist] uttered some abuse as he passed me, but did not stop and to deal with it.

To the editor:

I have had a few near misses on the Greenway path beside Mission Creek and this morning a cyclist who was going quite fast and approaching me head on, almost reached me before he skidded and swerved around me.

I can only think that he was not paying attention since my wife and I were on the left hand side, facing the cyclist directly in line with him.

He uttered some abuse as he passed me, but did not stop and to deal with it.

This is not the first time, and I do not think it will be the last either. I hope that maybe a few will read the Capital News and see something in here which may give them cause to think about what they could do if they hit an unsuspecting individual.

The speed at which some of these cyclists travel at is lethal, and it would not surprise me to find that someone has been injured.

I am not in the habit of writing to the papers, but I feel that something should be said, and perhaps the police cycling squad could make a few trips down there to check things out and maybe draw awareness to the fact that we are not all young and in perfect health and capable of being aware of our immediate surroundings, especially when approached from behind.

Many of us do not have the hearing sensitivity we once had, nor the agility to jump out of the way and our ability to recover from being run down will not be something to look forward to should we be unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

NB: You may hear a few more things from me in the future, I seem to have a few more items that are becoming too regular for my liking and my health, and other peoples’ also, as I walk around my home town.

J. Bush,

Kelowna
