LETTER: Deer stewardship position puzzling

Re: Oak Bay scores provincial funds to count deer, Oak Bay News, March 22

I am puzzled by the stewardship and the “ecological compass” of the so-called Urban Wildlife Stewardship Society.

Our exceptional urban forest, its associated ecosystems and numerous rare and endangered plants are our main terrestrial, ecological assets in Oak Bay. By far.

Threats to these exceptional, natural assets are coming from several directions, including the over abundant, urban black-tailed deer.

In my view, stewardship means being concerned first and foremost with our rarest wild plants and animals and our numerous species at risk. We have dozens in Oak Bay.

Enhancing our urban ecology is a huge challenge, particularly in Oak Bay, a living museum of sorts. Anything that degrades our urban ecology and natural heritage should be tackled boldly and expeditiously.
