LETTER: Does MP Morrison have this much power?

From reader Ron Robinson

Re: COMMONS CORNER: Challenging the government on vaccine availability and more, March 4

It was nice to see our representative, MP Rob Morrison, in text. A number of questions came to mind.

Regarding the Canada Recovery Benefit, Morrison said he would continue to support getting help to those in this region. My understanding for this government program is that Morrison’s support or non-support has nothing to do with this plan. Morrison also commented that the current government has not submitted a budget in some time and that a budget is needed to get people back to work. From the news, job loss is not a function of a budget not being presented, but rather the global economic downturn as a consequence of the pandemic.

Morrison also mentioned that his focus would be on securing jobs without indicating how that would happen in a global economic context and what influence he might have on the global economy to secure jobs. Regarding the Columbia River Treaty negotiations, how would Morrison’s observer status give voice to those negotiations that are not already being given? Overall it seems Mr. Morrison is offering to do things where he has no influence to do them.
