Open letter to West Kelowna Mayor and council:
Being rather disgusted by the amount of garbage that I have been finding recently in the Smith Creek area, I have attached a sheet of pictures and words for your attention. Is there anyway that something can be done regarding policing the illegal dumping?
When I took some of the garbage to the landfill and spoke to the attendant, he was able to show me equally horrendous pictures of assorted garbage—including masses of bullet casings (TV target practise) from the area he takes his quad to.
Highway 97 through West Kelowna and Westbank First Nations lands is looking more and more littered each day. There just does not seem to be any garbage collection from the roadside.
Is this the responsibly of the municipality and WFN or is it a Ministry of Transportation job?
I know that the snow will soon be here to “cover it up” but then the spring will bring back the problem as much of the garbage will not biodegrade.
Obviously, the general public should have more responsibility and respect for the environment—but that is the basic problem in both of the above scenarios—they just don’t.
The end result is that beautiful West Kelowna is not looking very beautiful at all.
