To the editor:
I frequently take my dog for a walk along Black Mountain Drive bordering the golf course.
Every spring, without fail, I’m witness to the carnage of road kill suffered by young marmots living in the area. It’s not unusual to see as many as three or four killed daily.
The speed is posted at 50 and traffic is not heavy, as the area is not yet fully developed; however, more than a few drivers ignore the speed limit and seem totally oblivious to the immature and inexperienced marmots trying to survive in what used to be a wilderness area.
We are so fortunate to live in an area rich in local flora and fauna that is often taken for granted. I’m sure that many of the locals have enjoyed watching the marmot families every year and their premature deaths are entirely avoidable if drivers will only exercise some caution and keep their speed under control.
I’m hoping you can publish this letter to raise awareness and, hopefully, save some young marmot lives.
