As I write this I am listening to multiple loud bangs from the Aug. 11 Parksville firework display. Along with this cacophony of noise are the cries of disturbed geese, my horses are terrified. I wonder how other domestic animals and wild animals are coping with this noisy intrusion in their lives.
Not only does this event, and others like it, create explosive noise pollution, but it also pollutes our ocean with the plastic debris from the fall out, and those who buy fireworks, hopefully unwittingly, may be contributing to the use of child labour where fireworks are made in unsafe conditions in some under-developed countries.
Perhaps it is time to reconsider the use of fireworks and if it is necessary to have some form of light show, consider something else such as a laser light show.
