LETTER: Government could sell homes at cost

With reference to your article in the April 27 Saanich News on Saanich seeking to be excluded from the speculation tax, I have something to say.

With reference to your article in the April 27 Saanich News on Saanich seeking to be excluded from the speculation tax, I have something to say.

I have lived in Singapore for a number of years and I think the local government found a suitable solution to accommodate the shelter needs of its citizens without creating discontent to the taxpayers.

The government could build condos in various areas of the province where they are the most needed, and sell them, at cost, to those citizens who cannot afford to pay market price. Applications could be sent from citizens to city hall, with decisions made according to their tax return. The rules could be ironed out, but I support the concept.
