Letter: Gov’t service can’t cope

I made my El claim over a month ago, and I am still yet to receive my claim

To the editor:

Hello, my name is Jesse Filion. I am a 21 year old Apprentice living in Kelowna B.C.

I am currently half way through my second year of apprenticeship training, and this is the first time I have been eligible for EI. I made my claim over a month ago, and I am still yet to receive my claim, and I am now carrying over my bills onto my credit cards due to the lengthy time that it has taken to receive my EI. I personally know several more people who have been in the same, or similar situations as apprentices receiving their EI. Any attempts at contacting the government results in my call being disconnected because every time I try to contact them, “call volumes are too high to transfer my call.”

I have had nothing but frustrations when dealing with this end of the government, and have heard more people have issues than not. I am amazed at the disorganization of this branch or the government. This is not a new service that is used by just a few people. Think about how many thousands of people may be effected by these delays. People budget and depend on these services are depended, and when there are delays, we are left to our own devices to deal with them.

I know that this is a constant topic of conversation both when I am in school, and when I am at work.

Jesse Filion,

Kelowna
